Fighting with Stationery

Once upon a time I was a lawyer. Surrounded by towering case files of blue and green, a burgeoning task list to manage deadlines and hundreds of post-it notes.

I loved it. The stories, the people, the outcomes and yes, even the paperwork. There were clear pathways to follow for each case, documents to be filed at particular times. It was easy to keep ahead of the long deadlines scheduled for accident cases and I had an exceptional mentor.

We headed into battle on behalf of our clients – fighting with words and documents, with photographs and clever arguments. Reassuring those who delved but for a day or so into the world that we saw as normal, crying with those who had lost almost everything that they had thought was ‘them’.

I am lucky enough to still hang out with the girls that I spent hours each day with – hashing out problems and unforeseen twists, eyes wide with indignation when phone calls with the other side turned ugly. Now, we turn over the details of our lives – our parenting battles, marriage troubles, health issues.

And every time I see a post-it note, it all comes flooding back.

This post is part of the #Write31Days challenge that I’m participating in along with talented community of other writers. We free write for five minutes (or more) each day guided by a prompt. Today’s prompt is ‘post-it’.

A Delightful Muddle

I hold a shameless devotion towards cocktail parties. It would have to be my favourite form of entertaining because it just…works. Limited set up – designing one cocktail, providing basic ingredients and finger food and creating some atmosphere; a gradual build up of anticipation before the event – as guests mull […]

Living In-between

By way of background to this post, in late 2013 I experienced a short and complicated pregnancy that was not to be. You can read about that experience here. That sweet naivete that I carried with me in my first two pregnancies disappeared then and I find it difficult not […]

Uncovering Stillness

It used to scare me a little. The complete peace – disturbed only by the subtle hum of appliances – was too exposing, too raw. Even now, I move quickly to flick on a podcast, to browse through Spotify playlists to set a mood. A mood other than the utter […]

The Secret Brew

Something is unfurling. Like the brittle tea leaves yielding to the wrap of the steaming flow, it uncurls and stretches in secret. To brew. The word is so evocative, enchanting. It speaks of magic – of inexplicable moments happening almost unseen before our very eyes. I’m not known for my […]

Paint it Black

It turns out that five is a hard year. Either that or we are doing something majorly wrong as parents? I hope it is the first option. Rages are a thing we are dealing with right now. Even this morning we battled. I cannot even remember what triggered the final […]

Walking Into the Past

When I was a little girl, my parents dragged us on many ‘bushwalks’. We would pile into the car, drive far into the rolling hills and tumble out somewhere in the middle of nowhere. Step. Step. Step. Tumble. Rocks were slick, ferns laced over winding and twisting paths. Trees towered […]
