The Secret Brew

Something is unfurling. Like the brittle tea leaves yielding to the wrap of the steaming flow, it uncurls and stretches in secret.

To brew. The word is so evocative, enchanting. It speaks of magic – of inexplicable moments happening almost unseen before our very eyes.

I’m not known for my patience. Japanese Tea Ceremonies would be lost on my toe tapping, hand on hip waiting, though I do cherish the moment that the steam lifts and curls in ecstasy as I gently tilt the black ceramic teapot over the waiting cup, watching the sugar crystals swirl and lose themselves – becoming something greater in the process.

For the past eleven weeks I have been waiting. Two lines revealed themselves to an empty bathroom as I dealt with rages and spills in another room. A spark of fear, followed quickly by gratitude. New life has begun.

At this stage, the only signs of presence are to overcome me with fatigue, luring me often to the pillows and welcoming me with faded whispers. The unpredictable waves of nausea hit with the force of high tide and I succumb by tearing open pantry doors in urgency.

But in the quiet moments, as I place my hands on my belly and wonder – ‘Who are you, little one? What will your hopes and dream be? How will you forge your puzzle piece to match the ever-shifting force of your family and universe?’ And I wait, with a semblance of patience, to witness the miracle of life.

I’m trying something new this month – #Write31Days with a talented community of other writers. We free write for five minutes (or more) each day guided by a prompt. Today’s prompt is ‘brew’.

The Little Room of Magic

Like a certain enchanted entrance into the world of Narnia, it does transform me – from bleary-eyed, ‘Hello Kitty’ onesie-wearing slob, into the semblance of a dignified woman. I have always found a mischievous sense of delight in my wardrobe. Having been introduced to op shopping at an early age, I […]

Paint it Black

It turns out that five is a hard year. Either that or we are doing something majorly wrong as parents? I hope it is the first option. Rages are a thing we are dealing with right now. Even this morning we battled. I cannot even remember what triggered the final […]

Walking Into the Past

When I was a little girl, my parents dragged us on many ‘bushwalks’. We would pile into the car, drive far into the rolling hills and tumble out somewhere in the middle of nowhere. Step. Step. Step. Tumble. Rocks were slick, ferns laced over winding and twisting paths. Trees towered […]
