Love in the Mail

There is a box in our garage filled with stories. Papery, magical stories. The words are from another age, a time where love was delivered in coloured envelopes, recorded on delicate sheets of paper. We learned who each other was, as each letter was delivered.

I remember the feeling so keenly. Carefully peeling back the sticky envelope tab to see what missive of passion and wit awaited. Smoothing crinkled paper and seeing the curls and dashes of ink, the white spaces framing the importance of each vowel and consonant. Words – put together with love, urgency and an outpouring of his heart.

I’m not gifted at speaking my mind. The fear or disappointment in the face of the other is enough to clamp shut my jaw and I hear myself uttering placating words instead of what I came there to say. Letters, on the other hand, are suited well to my slower pace of delivery. Each word crafted to ensure the message I hoped would come out.

Now we have seen almost 12 years of marriage. Our letters appear only on special occasions. But the memories of those first formative moments continue to make me smile.

This post is part of #Write31Days and the Five Minute Friday challenge that I’m participating in along with talented community of other writers. We free write for five minutes (or more) guided by a prompt. Today’s prompt is ‘mail’.

Joining the Dots

I’m a bit of a lecturer by nature. An opportunity will present itself to educate one of my children on the ills of the world, or the secret to the universe and I seize it – both hands enthusiastically latching onto the gift and refusing to let go. Dave often […]

Reaching for the Sky

You would think that the fourth time around would be less exciting somehow. That the ‘been there, done this’ feeling would be more prevalent than the incredible sense of wonder that accompanies the first of any experience. Not so. This morning Dave and I nervously waited in the ultrasound reception […]

A Beautiful Conundrum

I remember reading my first chapter book when I was six – ‘Naughty Amelia Jane‘ by Enid Blyton. It was as if a door to another world creaked open and I realised that stories could be magical and devourable. Then came Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys – mysteries, always mysteries. […]

Fighting with Stationery

Once upon a time I was a lawyer. Surrounded by towering case files of blue and green, a burgeoning task list to manage deadlines and hundreds of post-it notes. I loved it. The stories, the people, the outcomes and yes, even the paperwork. There were clear pathways to follow for […]

A Delightful Muddle

I hold a shameless devotion towards cocktail parties. It would have to be my favourite form of entertaining because it just…works. Limited set up – designing one cocktail, providing basic ingredients and finger food and creating some atmosphere; a gradual build up of anticipation before the event – as guests mull […]

Living In-between

By way of background to this post, in late 2013 I experienced a short and complicated pregnancy that was not to be. You can read about that experience here. That sweet naivete that I carried with me in my first two pregnancies disappeared then and I find it difficult not […]

Uncovering Stillness

It used to scare me a little. The complete peace – disturbed only by the subtle hum of appliances – was too exposing, too raw. Even now, I move quickly to flick on a podcast, to browse through Spotify playlists to set a mood. A mood other than the utter […]
