In the Midst…

It’s messy in the middle.

Toys strewn, boxes scattered of

their innards, doors opening

then easing shut.

I take a breath, letting it out

slowly.

I look down at my

ever expanding middle –

watching the tiny shark fin

track its way

beneath the surface.

I take a breath, letting it out

expectantly.

Conversations stop in the

middle.

Trails of thought skip and leap,

caught between desires

at the same time.

I take a breath, letting it out

wistfully.

Perhaps this perpetual motion

finds us at our most real –

whispering of the secret

buried in plain sight.

For even our beginnings were

first revealed

in the sharp inhalation

of delight.

This post is part of the Five Minute Friday writing challenge. Each Friday I join with this talented group of writers, free writing for five minutes in accordance with a prompt. Today’s prompt is ‘middle’.

Twenty Things I’ve Learned in 2016

“Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.” Søren Kierkegaard There is a peculiar feeling that accompanies the closure of another year. Memories of last Christmas flood back in and I begin to experience that strange mix of surprise and familiarity at the way the year rolls […]

The Veiled Symphony

There is an undergirding hum of throbbing energy, the tick  of a striding clock. The Gravity of Joy

Succumbing

A burst of energy I seize it, both hands clasping, wishing for a hint of my former shadow –  energy, vitality, creativity I push past the fade wanting to reclaim the version of myself that satisfies me Not the hamstrung, snuffed out rest-seeking missile The crystal glass eludes me I […]

Condiments

I can breathe again Fill my lungs with hope and  gaze forward beyond the next queasy moment Bend down to sort toys into  boxes, think about something other than my next desperate meal See altercations without  expelling a sigh of  ‘seriously’ Embrace the giving of  lectures, cuddles, guidance Savour the aroma […]

A Common Life

So much of my life right now involves moments of routine, repetition and the mundane. Wake up, serve breakfast, get kids dressed, attend appointments/drop offs, make lunch, set up kids in rest time, make dinner, bathtime, bedtime. Often, you would be forgiven for mistaking days that merge into one – […]

What If I Stumble?

Watching the three tumbling bodies wrestle on the rug last night, it struck me: “They will never be this little again…” and then the follow up thought: “Thank goodness”. It had been a rough afternoon of tantrums and parenting battles, arguments and rages. What had started off as special experiences […]

Irrational Imaginings

Food at the moment is divided into two categories – stuff that works, and that which doesn’t. I wouldn’t exactly call it craving, but there have been stages of addiction to edible items, usually those of the fast food variety. The day I found out you could no longer buy […]
