A Culinary Surprise

I’m getting better at cooking.

Sometimes I drop the egg before it gets to the bowl,

Or crank the heat up before the pan is ready.

Whisking furiously when the recipe calls for

gentle folding.

But sometimes, the ingredients before me

sing in perfect harmony

I notice the tiny flecks of flour,

watching in surprise as the cake rises

to the occasion.

Time slows, I turn down the oven

I throw a smile into the bowl

taking the glance of wonder and

adding that into the mix.

It seems to me that I have all the tools,

the recipe and the produce

to keep on creating

magic.

The Alchemy of Invention

As I pondered the concept of ‘building’ it soon became clear that it surrounds me all the time. It struck me that the moment where we ‘lose ourselves’ is quite magical. I’ve tried to capture the beauty of those moments for each of our family members here. //He places the next […]

A Battle of Shadows

I have a shadow. He leans in as I type, pointing out facts about life, asking me questions incessantly. I struggle not to react in annoyance, rescuing a precious fineliner from sticky fingers. Concentration dipping between two worlds, neither in one or the other. He smothers his sister, unable to hold […]

Breathing

He’s home. A collective sigh shudders. We imagine the mundane again. I exhale and begin to slot into Old patterns The good cheer of rising to the challenge Dissipates. New rhythms, needs clash. We try and fail and repeat. The funk hovers, thick in its haze. I escape. Friends breathe […]

Putting the Pieces Together

It would seem that I am addicted to ‘self-improvement’. Stumbling onto methods of better understanding the inner workings of the mind – TED talks, SuperBetter, podcasts, yoga. I consume inspirational memoirs, how-to parenting books, urgently scroll through blog posts in my downtime. The lightbulb moment is the pinnacle. I feel […]
