With one foot
I rock
back and forth
calm and bright
a steady pace
for silvery sleep
…
With a loaded cart
I steer
through crowded aisles
and car parks
Re-stocking shelves
stirring pots
refilling endlessly
empty bellies
…
With frenzied fingers
I type
Spilling words, wishes
and realisations
Finding the
pulse underneath
Hoping for
existential purpose
and a life that
counts
…
With each movement
I exist
The mundane, understated
nature of each task
underscoring the
brilliance
of life
lived for others
expressed through
passion, purpose and
creativity
This post is inspired by the Five Minute Friday writing challenge. Each week I join with this talented group of writers, free writing for five minutes in accordance with a prompt. Today’s prompt is ‘steady’.

A life lived for others. I could not agree more. I love your poetry and how it lingers on me for awhile. Thank you so much for this gem. #fmf
What a beautiful compliment – thank you Carolina! So glad that I get to read your pieces each week xx
What a very nice realistic poem that so many can relate to. I think it is the little things that make the most difference in others lives. I’m your FMF neighbor this week and my 15-year-old daughter wanted to write my post today.
Just visited your site and I think that is such a great idea – to let your daughter have a go at writing! Shows your faith and belief in her 🙂
Well, gosh, Emma.
With this poem you have caught the Zen of Life.
Really superb!
Aw, thanks Andrew, that means a lot!
Love it. Thank you.

Thanks for stopping by!
I love your post. Steadiness can involve a lot of motion and action, can’t it? especially as a parent trying to balance creative work and the mundane requirements that life brings. “Finding the pulse underneath”: maybe that is the key to that inner steadiness and steadfastness, God’s beating heart beneath our own.
Thanks for this — it is just beautiful!

What a poetic way to put it – God’s beating heart beneath our own… I really like that 🙂
Love this poem!
Thanks! xx
