The Mirage

Weekend, you hold such promise

of relaxation, life and fun

so why do I find you hollow?

A re-occurence of some

of the monotony and duties

of the week? A glimmer of

hope fades into the distance

and I squint into the blight

of mopping up after small humans –

changing those same nappies

that haunted me on Monday

prompting voices to say ‘please’

and hands not to hit their siblings.

When I wish away the moment

I find that the future becomes

‘the unsatisfying present’

and it cannot be undone.

If only I could push through this

haze and see the beauty –

not focus on the things that put

me into agony.

*The concept of the future reappearing as the unsatisfying present is one taken from Eckhart Tolle’s On Being interview with Krista Tippett. It is a concept that I find very challenging, though it doesn’t always fix my mood or change approach to the moment (as evidenced above!).

This post is part of the #Write31Days challenge that I’m participating in along with a talented community of other writers. We free write for five minutes (or more) guided by a prompt. Today’s prompt is ‘weekend’.
